Before leaving the former ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Mulbah K. Morlu had a strained relationship with former President George Manneh Weah. However, he has now emerged as the chairman of a new political group called Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND). In this new role, Morlu has pledged to be a strong advocate for justice for war victims and crimes against humanity in Liberia.
Speaking at the launch of STAND at the PHP sports park in central Monrovia on Sunday, March 17, 2024, Morlu promised to fearlessly pursue justice on behalf of those who have suffered. He emphasized that he is not against any political party, including the Unity Party (UP) or CDC, but rather focused on seeking justice for the people of Liberia.
The launch of STAND saw a historic gathering of thousands of Liberians at the Unification Park, symbolizing the onset of a significant new era. Morlu highlighted the tragic history of Liberia, recounting the horrors that the country has experienced, including the execution of government officials under Samuel K. Doe and the subsequent violence and chaos that ensued.
Morlu emphasized the importance of seeking justice through the establishment of a hybrid war crimes court to prosecute senior perpetrators of atrocities. While some recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) were implemented, the quest for justice remains unfulfilled in many aspects.
STAND, according to Morlu, will represent the voice of marginalized populations and advocate for the fair distribution of the nation’s wealth. The group aims to transform Liberia into a stronghold of freedom and economic prosperity for all its citizens, particularly those who have been excluded from the country’s development.
Morlu condemned the recent incident in Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount County, where live bullets were used on peaceful protesters. He described the actions of the police as arbitrary and senseless, highlighting the need for greater respect for human rights and peaceful protest in the country.
In conclusion, Morlu’s leadership of STAND marks a new chapter in Liberia’s political landscape, with a renewed focus on seeking justice and advocating for the rights of all citizens. His commitment to addressing the injustices of the past and building a more inclusive and prosperous future for Liberia sets the stage for a promising era of change and progress.
