The House of Representatives made a significant decision in January this year by voting to return the draft National Budget to the Executive branch under President Boakai’s leadership. This budget was originally submitted by the previous administration led by Mr. Weah. The purpose of returning the budget was to allow the new administration to adjust and realign its priorities and agenda within the budget framework.
Representative Moima Briggs Mensah from Bong County Electoral District #6 raised concerns about the delay in the submission of Liberia’s National Budget by the Executive branch. Despite the budget being submitted before the previous administration’s exit, there was a lack of formal communication from the Executive branch regarding the reasons for the delay in submitting the budget for the year 2024.
It was explained that the House of Representatives unanimously voted to send back the budget to the Executive in order for it to be properly adjusted to align with President Boakai’s 100-day deliverables and his ‘ARREST’ platform. This platform focuses on Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism as key areas for the nation’s development.
Representative Mensah emphasized the importance of timely submission of the budget for the implementation of the government’s development agenda. She expressed disappointment that the Ministry of Finance had neglected a previous deadline set by the House of Representatives for the submission of the budget.
The delay in submitting the budget was raised by Rep. Mensah as a point of concern, especially considering the impact it could have on the implementation of President Boakai’s vision for the country. She called for transparency and accountability in the process and urged her colleagues to investigate the reasons for the delay.
In response to these concerns, the House Plenary instructed its Chief Clerk to send a communication to the Minister of Finance and Development Planning to remind him of the need to resubmit the budget promptly. The goal is to ensure that the budget is submitted in a timely manner to support the government’s development priorities and initiatives.
Overall, the issue of the delayed budget submission highlights the importance of effective communication and coordination between the Executive branch and the Legislature in Liberia. It also underscores the significance of timely budget approval and implementation in driving the country’s development agenda forward. The House of Representatives continues to play a crucial role in holding the government accountable and advocating for the best interests of the Liberian people.
