The newly-appointed Mayor of Monrovia, John-Charuk Siafa, is leading a revolution in the city, not with guns, but with brooms, tricycles, and wheelbarrows, to give the nation’s capital and its surroundings a much-needed facelift. Every first Saturday of the month, Mayor Siafa initiates a city-wide cleaning campaign to keep Monrovia, one of Africa’s oldest cities named after the United States’ Fifth President, James Monroe, clean, green, and safe for residents and visitors.

The cleaning-up exercise was originally introduced by former Mayor Mary T. Broh and has now been reawakened by the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) under the leadership of Mayor John-Charuk Siafa. The government of Liberia is committed to ensuring that Monrovia remains a clean and safe city for all its inhabitants.

Mayor Siafa emphasized the importance of resident participation in maintaining the cleanliness of the city. He urged the people of Monrovia to support the clean city initiative and take responsibility for creating a more hygienic environment. The monthly cleanup exercise is a mandatory activity that will be carried out diligently on the first Saturday of each month.

During the recent cleanup exercise, Mayor Siafa and MCC staff members worked tirelessly to ensure that the city was realistically cleaned. While cleaning the streets, MCC workers wearing reflective vests and gloves spread awareness in different areas, encouraging community engagement.

The citywide cleanup campaign kicked off with the slogan “Own your street, own your city, keep it clean,” aiming to promote civic and environmental stewardship. Various institutions and entities, including the Ministry of Public Works, JNB/JKK volunteers, and the Monrovia Lions Club, participated in the exercise with enthusiastic community involvement.

One of the targeted areas for cleaning was Center Street, a major waste hotspot in Monrovia. This area, particularly the Center Street Cemetery, is often littered with garbage, and Mayor Siafa is determined to address this issue. He plans to implement a long-term waste management strategy to ensure the city remains clean and safe.

Mayor Siafa highlighted the need for increased funding and material support from the national government and partners to assist the Monrovia City Government in its efforts. He also expressed his commitment to depoliticizing the city corporation to create a more efficient working environment based on honesty, hard work, and mutual respect.

In conclusion, Mayor Siafa is focused on improving the institution’s operations, encouraging results-driven performance from MCC employees. He commended the staff for their collaboration and emphasized the importance of working together to achieve the common goal of enhancing the institution.

As Monrovia faces infrastructural challenges, Mayor Siafa is determined to provide sound leadership to overcome these obstacles and ensure a cleaner and greener city for all its residents. Through continued efforts and community engagement, Monrovia is on the path to becoming a cleaner, safer, and more appealing city for all.
