The Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) recently conducted an awareness campaign on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), USAID, and the University of Liberia College of Health Sciences (ULCHS) through the BRIDGE-U: Liberia project, along with other partners. The objective of the campaign was to disseminate information about the importance of CPD among healthcare providers in the country.

The Coordinator of CPD BRIDGE-U, Shirley S. Fahnbulleh, spoke at the conclusion of the awareness campaign at the Nyehn Health Center in Todee Statutory District #1, Monsterrado County. She mentioned that the dissemination of CPD began on 24 January, and they had a better turnout than expected, with over 50 participants in Montserrado County. Fahnbulleh expressed that the healthcare providers were pleased with the initiative and acknowledged the positive impact it could have on their practice and patient care.

She emphasized that CPD plays a vital role in improving the knowledge and skills of healthcare providers, ultimately leading to enhanced quality of care for patients. Fahnbulleh also expressed optimism that in the next two or three years, all healthcare providers in Liberia would have practices at the level of the facility, indicating that such an initiative would bring the country on par with other countries in the sub-region.

Fahnbulleh informed that they are planning to expand the awareness campaign to cover the entire Liberia, having already conducted a training session at the Nyehn Health Center in Todee Statutory District. This further demonstrates their commitment to reaching as many healthcare providers as possible across the country.

Dave Wuo Kehnel, Jr., the Secretary General of Liberia Environmental Health Board, explained that CPD is essential for professionals to maintain, improve, and broaden their knowledge, expertise, and competence. He stressed the significance of CPD in updating professional practice to reflect the best available evidence.

Joseph Coleman, the Medical and Research Director of Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC), emphasized that starting in April 2025, CPD would be a requirement for license renewal. This highlights the increasing importance of CPD in ensuring that healthcare providers stay updated with the latest developments in their field and maintain the highest standards of professional practice.

The collaborative efforts of the LMDC, WHO, USAID, ULCHS, and other partners in raising awareness about CPD reflect a strong commitment to improving the healthcare sector in Liberia. By prioritizing the ongoing professional development of healthcare providers, the country is taking a significant step toward ensuring that its healthcare practices are aligned with international standards. It is expected that these efforts will contribute to better patient care and a more robust healthcare system in Liberia.
