The Liberia Cooperative Standard Education School System (LICOSESS) marked a significant milestone on Saturday, 24 February 2024, as it celebrated the graduation of its first Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) candidates. This event was a momentous occasion for the institution as 90 candidates successfully obtained their Bachelor’s degrees from the College of Education. Additionally, the Teacher College awarded Associate degrees through the USAID TESTS program, as part of its 20th “AA” degrees program. Furthermore, 341 students received “C” Certificates, showcasing the diverse educational opportunities offered by LICOSESS.

Dr. Benjamin Yele Wehye, the president of LICOSESS Teacher Training, highlighted the transformation of the Colleges of Education, emphasizing the shift from a mere “C” Certificate to a Bachelor’s degree. This transition reflects the college’s dedication to enhancing the education sector in Liberia and aligning with the government’s efforts to broaden access to higher education. Dr. Wehye encouraged the graduates to continue their pursuit of knowledge, embracing innovation and technology in their teaching practices. He expressed confidence in the graduates’ ability to inspire and mold the minds of the next generation of Liberian leaders, urging them to approach their roles with grace and integrity.

Acknowledging the support of the Government of Liberia, the National Commission on Higher Education, and USAID Tests, Dr. Wehye emphasized the pivotal role of these partnerships in empowering students to become future leaders and change-makers in the field of education. Catherine Rodríguez, the Charge d’Affairs of the United States Embassy near Monrovia, delivered the keynote address, urging the graduates to leverage their training to achieve excellence. She commended LICOSESS for its contributions to the education sector and reaffirmed the US Embassy’s commitment to supporting the college’s initiatives.

Marita Coleman, the valedictorian, expressed gratitude to LICOSESS for its commitment to accessibility and affordability in education. She called upon her fellow graduates to utilize the quality training they received to explore their potential and bring pride to LICOSESS. The convocation ceremony, held at the Liberty Christian Church in Johnsonville, was a vibrant and celebratory event, symbolizing the achievements and aspirations of the graduating class.

Overall, the graduation of the first cohort of Bachelor of Education candidates from LICOSESS represents a significant advancement in the institution’s educational offerings and its commitment to shaping future leaders in Liberia. The combination of academic excellence, practical training, and a strong sense of community engagement underscores the valuable contributions of LICOSESS to the educational landscape of Liberia. The graduates are poised to make meaningful contributions to the field of education and uphold the values of integrity, innovation, and lifelong learning instilled in them during their time at the college.
