The Finance Minister of Liberia, Boima S. Kamara, recently gave an insightful assessment of the country’s economic landscape, highlighting the pressing need for strengthened partnerships and international collaboration to tackle the challenges ahead. Speaking on the current economic challenges facing Liberia under President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, Mr. Kamara painted a picture of the complex fiscal hurdles that the nation is currently grappling with. This assessment was made during a meeting with the UN Resident Coordinator at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning on February 22, 2024.

With the post-pandemic economic recovery progressing slowly and global economic uncertainties looming, Liberia is facing a myriad of complex challenges, including inflationary pressures and the necessity for increased foreign investment. Minister Kamara stressed the critical juncture at which the Liberian economy finds itself, despite the significant strides made in peace and democratic governance. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the need for a stronger partnership across all sectors of the United Nations to drive a vibrant and moving economy.

During the meeting, Minister Kamara underscored the significance of enhanced cooperation with the United Nations and its agencies, signaling that such support is crucial for Liberia to achieve its economic and development goals. The UN Resident Coordinator echoed Minister Kamara’s sentiments and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to assisting Liberia in its economic recovery and sustainable development efforts. The Resident Coordinator, Ms. Christine N. Umutoni, expressed the UN’s readiness to collaborate closely with the Liberian government and provide support to help the country build back better and transform the lives of its citizens.

Ms. Umutoni highlighted the need for coordination at various levels, including government, UN, and Development Partner leadership, through agreed-upon coordination mechanisms such as the Joint Steering Committee and sectoral coordination. She acknowledged the Liberian government’s request for support in implementing the 100-Day Deliverables and developing a one-year national development plan within six months. Additionally, Ms. Umutoni mentioned the UN’s awareness of Liberia’s engagement with the ECA and UN Regional Support teams, stating that these entities are prepared to provide a multidisciplinary team with in-country technical expertise to support the government’s processes based on their request for assistance.

Overall, the meeting between Minister Kamara and the UN Resident Coordinator emphasized the importance of collaboration and support from international partners in navigating Liberia’s economic challenges and achieving sustainable development goals. As Liberia continues to strive for economic stability and growth, the partnership with the United Nations and other stakeholders will be instrumental in driving progress and improving the livelihoods of the Liberian people.
