The recent killing of a man suspected of power theft by individuals believed to be part of the anti-power theft task force has sparked outrage and demands for justice. Montserrado District #15 Representative Abu B. Kamara has called for an investigation into the death of Mr. Josephus S. Tukpeh, a resident of Caldwell, by the Liberia National Police and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).

Representative Kamara, who is an opposition lawmaker, has given the authorities a 72-hour ultimatum to investigate the incident or face unspecified citizens’ action. He described the death of Mr. Tukpeh as reckless and called for justice to be served. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, involved members of the Power Theft Division of the LEC and the Liberia National Police accusing Mr. Tukpeh of power theft and allegedly causing a conflict that led to his death.

After meeting with representatives from the LNP and LEC at the LNP headquarters, Representative Kamara expressed frustration over the government’s handling of the situation, particularly the disrespectful removal of Mr. Tukpeh’s body from the Stockton Creek Clinic without the family’s consent. The LEC has condemned the violence that resulted in Mr. Tukpeh’s death and expressed regret and sadness over the incident.

In a press release issued by the LEC, the corporation stated its commitment to supporting the police investigation and ensuring that justice is served. The LEC has initiated collaboration with law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and transparently. Additionally, the LEC has provided support to Mr. Tukpeh’s family and pledged to assist them during this challenging time.

Police Inspector General Col. Geogry Coleman also expressed sadness over the situation and assured the public that the LNP would conduct a thorough investigation. Col. Coleman stated that members of the Power Theft Team involved in the incident are undergoing investigation at the Police headquarters. He emphasized the importance of conducting an impartial investigation and providing support to Mr. Tukpeh’s family during their time of mourning.

The death of Mr. Tukpeh has raised concerns about excessive force and lack of proper procedures in handling cases of power theft. The demand for justice and accountability from the authorities reflects a larger issue of transparency and respect for human rights in Liberia. As the investigation unfolds, it is essential for all involved parties to prioritize the truth, ensure due process, and uphold the rule of law to prevent similar incidents in the future.
