The House of Representatives Committee on Posts and Telecommunications has taken action against two GSM companies in Southeast Liberia for providing poor services and failing to notify customers about service disruptions. The committee has instructed these companies to restitute unused credits to affected customers in the region.
The decision was made following a probe into the deteriorating services provided by these companies in Southeast Liberia. The committee’s recommendations were presented to the House of Representatives plenary on Thursday, March 7, after a thorough investigation into the challenges faced by customers using LoneStar MTN’s networks.
During a House sitting on February 15, 2024, Representative Johnson N. Williams from River Gee County District #3 raised concerns about the poor services provided by LoneStar MTN. He reported that the services, including voice calls, SMS, and internet, were unstable for two months, and the company failed to inform customers about the issues.
In response to these complaints, the Committee on Posts and Telecommunications recommended to the House plenary that a comprehensive report on customer restitution be presented after the companies comply with the instructions. Committee Chair Representative Ivar K. Jones disclosed that they conducted a hearing with LoneStar MTN and Orange Liberia on February 21 to discuss the quality of services provided in response to Representative Williams’s communication.
During the hearing, both companies acknowledged the complaints and attributed the issues to equipment problems affecting their services in Southeast Liberia. They informed the committee that signal interferences and poor road conditions were the main challenges they faced in addressing these issues in the region.
The committee also visited the companies’ head offices to understand the methodology used by the companies to monitor their networks across the country. Despite the challenges highlighted by the companies, the committee emphasized the importance of providing reliable services to customers in Southeast Liberia.
The Committee on Posts and Telecommunications’ actions aim to hold these GSM companies accountable for their poor service delivery and ensure that customers in Southeast Liberia receive the quality services they deserve. The committee will continue to monitor the situation and ensure that the companies comply with the restitution instructions to benefit the affected customers in the region.
