The Government of Liberia, through the Disaster Management Agency of Liberia, recently showed solidarity with the families affected by a tragic fire incident in Du-Port Road, Paynesville. The fire outbreak resulted in the loss of at least five lives. To console the grieving families, the Disaster Management Agency provided them with 100 bags of 25kg rice each.

During the presentation of the donation on behalf of the government, Mr. Ansu Dulleh, the Executive Director of the agency, expressed sorrow over the tragic incident and emphasized that the government wanted to express its concern for the affected citizens. He mentioned that the donation was a gesture from President Joseph N. Boakai to show support for the families in their time of grief.

Mr. Dulleh acknowledged that while material goods cannot bring back the lost loved ones, the government felt it was important to demonstrate its empathy and care for the community. He also highlighted the government’s awareness of the recurring fire incidents in the country and mentioned that additional donations were being arranged for fire victims in Cape Mount.

The devastating fire in the Du-Port Road Community occurred on Wednesday, 21st February 2024, claiming the lives of five individuals. Reports indicated that the fire originated from a candle in one of the rooms and quickly engulfed the entire house. Despite efforts by community members to extinguish the blaze using sand and water, the intensity of the fire proved overwhelming.

Eyewitnesses recounted a chaotic scene as neighbors tried to rescue the victims, but the lack of immediate firefighting resources hindered their efforts. The Liberia National Fire Service was reportedly unable to respond promptly as all their trucks were out of service at the time of the incident.

Residents described seeing thick dark smoke from the apartment where the victims lived, prompting calls for help. However, the absence of operational fire trucks delayed any effective response. The situation escalated quickly, leaving the community in distress and mourning the tragic loss of life.

Representative Michael Thomas of Montserrado County Electoral District Four, who received the donations on behalf of the affected families, commended the government’s swift action through the Disaster Management Agency. He reassured the community of his commitment to advocating for additional support and aid for the victims.

Mr. Thomas emphasized the significance of the timely donation, portraying it as a tangible demonstration of the government’s dedication to addressing the needs and challenges faced by its citizens. The compassionate gesture of providing essential food supplies reflected a compassionate response to a community in mourning and underscored the government’s pledge to stand by its people in times of hardship.
