Garbage collection and city ordinances have posed significant challenges for many cities in Liberia, particularly in the capital city of Monrovia. To address these issues, various government agencies are now collaborating to work towards maintaining clean and orderly cities.
The Ministry of Public Works (MPW), Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), Liberia National Police (LNP), and other relevant ministries and agencies have joined forces to form an Inter-Governmental Agency City-Cleaning Taskforce. This taskforce aims to complement the government’s existing efforts to ensure that cities in Liberia are clean and well-maintained.
During a press conference held on March 26, 2024, Minister of Public Works Roland Layfette Giddings emphasized the government’s commitment to cleanliness as part of its ARREST Agenda. He announced the establishment of the Inter-Governmental Agencies City-Cleaning Taskforce, which will focus on collaborative initiatives to clean up Monrovia and other cities in the country.
Mayor John Charuk Siafa of the Monrovia City Corporation echoed Minister Giddings’ sentiments, emphasizing the importance of continuous engagement and persistent efforts to uphold cleanliness standards in the city. He called for the active participation of communities in maintaining clean streets and urban areas, stressing the need for cooperation from all residents.
Mayor Siafa urged the public to support the efforts of the Inter-Governmental Agencies City-Cleaning Taskforce by educating themselves on waste management practices in Monrovia and surrounding areas. He reassured the public that the taskforce is dedicated to achieving its goals, starting with the deployment of community teams to address sanitation issues.
In addition to the MCC, the Liberia National Police (LNP) has also pledged its commitment to enforcing laws and regulations that contribute to keeping the city clean. Deputy Chief of Public Safety, Mr. John M. Saah, reaffirmed the police force’s role in ensuring compliance with cleanliness standards and promoting a clean urban environment for all residents.
Mayor Siafa further explained that the city government is working on developing policies with various stakeholders, including street vendors, marketers, and petty traders, to implement practical approaches to improving the city’s cleanliness. These policies aim to give Monrovia a much-needed facelift and create a more visually appealing environment for residents and visitors alike.
Overall, the collaborative efforts of the government agencies, local authorities, and community members are crucial in addressing the challenges of garbage collection and city ordinances in Liberia. By working together and fostering a sense of shared responsibility, these stakeholders are paving the way for cleaner, more livable cities across the country.
