Former Presidential Candidate and human rights lawyer, Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe, is advocating for the Liberian government to establish a Special Commission of Inquiry to investigate the suspicious and mysterious deaths of past officials. This call comes as a means to promote transparency and build confidence in the government under the leadership of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai. According to Cllr. Gongloe, the establishment of such a commission will ensure that suspicions surrounding these deaths are addressed, thus allowing for genuine investment and progress in the country.
In a recent address in Monrovia, Cllr. Gongloe emphasized the need for an investigation into suspicious deaths spanning from former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s administration to the current presidency of George M. Weah. He pointed out that over the past 15 to 20 years, there have been numerous suspicious deaths in Liberia, some of which were investigated by the government. However, there remains skepticism about the findings of these investigations, warranting the need for a dedicated commission to delve deeper.
Cllr. Gongloe specifically highlighted cases such as Harris Greaves during former President Sirleaf’s administration and the auditors, Princess Cooper, and three missing boys during President Weah’s tenure. He stressed the importance of addressing these suspicions to put an end to rumors and facilitate unity and reconciliation in the country.
Furthermore, Cllr. Gongloe underscored that the quest for justice and truth is crucial for the country’s reconciliation and overall well-being. He noted that the lingering suspicions surrounding these deaths have hindered genuine investment in Liberia, resulting in a lower influx of investors. He believes that a thorough investigation, backed by credible forensic expertise, will bring closure to these cases and restore confidence in the government’s ability to address such matters.
Additionally, Cllr. Gongloe commended President Boakai for the appointment of Dr. Emmanuel Urey-Yarkpawolo as the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Dr. Urey-Yarkpawolo served as Gongloe’s running mate during the 2023 election, and his appointment was seen as a step towards openness and integrity in the government. Gongloe expressed confidence that Dr. Urey-Yarkpawolo’s expertise would elevate the sector and foster trust and confidence in the government.
As Liberia seeks to move forward and attract genuine investment, the establishment of a Special Commission of Inquiry to investigate suspicious deaths of past officials, as advocated by Cllr. Gongloe, holds significant promise for the country’s future. It is a step towards addressing long-standing suspicions, promoting transparency, and restoring confidence in the Liberian government.
