Former Senator Thomas Grupee has announced his comeback, revealing his plan to vie for a senatorial by-election scheduled for early April. Despite grappling with health conditions, Grupee expressed his intention to potentially run as an Independent Candidate in order to unite his people regardless of their party affiliations.

The announcement was made by Grupee in Nimba County on March 5, 2024. During a news conference in Ganta, Nimba County, he called upon his fellow citizens to support him in his bid for the senate, urging them to reflect on his accomplishments during his time in the former 53rd Legislature. Grupee highlighted the 101 development projects he implemented across all 19 administrative districts of Nimba during his tenure as senator.

In his address, Grupee emphasized that he is not seeking to enter the senate to learn on the job, as he already has prior experience in that role. He expressed his disappointment with the current lawmakers from Nimba County, accusing them of failing to prioritize job opportunities for their constituents, unlike his administration under former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Appealing to the people of Nimba County, Grupee pointed to his track record of over one hundred projects and emphasized the unity, peace, and progress that characterized his previous term. He asserted that his leadership style fosters accountability, transparency, and unity, qualities that he aims to continue promoting if re-elected.

The upcoming senatorial by-election in April aims to fill the vacancy left by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, who served three out of his nine-year term before assuming the presidency through the Rescue Ticket of the now-ruling Unity Party. Despite his health challenges, Grupee’s decision to re-enter the political arena has been met with support from many Nimbaians who appreciate his past leadership.

As Grupee prepares for his potential candidacy, his message resonates with a call for continuity, experience, and a commitment to the well-being of Nimba County residents. His promise to build on past achievements and promote unity among his constituents sets the stage for a competitive and meaningful electoral race in early April.
