The Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL) has emerged as a strong supporter of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, particularly in light of recent calls for his impeachment by opposition lawmakers. Led by Mr. Emanuel Gonquoi, the EFFL stood by Boakai during his 2023 presidential bid, even going so far as to deploy supporters to protect his votes. This unwavering support for Boakai has been evident in the party’s dismissal of the impeachment calls, viewing them as a mere distraction orchestrated by the opposition.
In response to the impeachment calls made by Representatives Yekeh Kolubah and Frank Saah Foko, Gonquoi has labeled them as tactics to divert attention from the audit of the previous administration. Foko, a member of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), and Kolubah, who previously supported Boakai but has now aligned with the CDC, have accused Boakai of constitutional breaches and ineffective governance. Foko, in particular, has vowed to propose a bill for Boakai’s impeachment, citing these alleged violations.
However, Gonquoi has staunchly defended Boakai, arguing that the impeachment calls are a ploy by CDC lawmakers to shift the focus away from the audit ordered by Boakai himself. The audit, targeting government institutions such as the Central Bank of Liberia, the National Security Agency, and the Executive Protection Service, seeks to uncover possible corruption and mismanagement from the previous administration. Despite attending meetings related to asset recovery and outlining terms of reference for the audit, Gonquoi expressed frustration at the lack of progress in holding accountable those responsible for financial malpractice.
Furthermore, Gonquoi raised concerns about the General Auditing Commission’s (GAC) willingness to effectively implement Boakai’s anti-corruption agenda, noting a lack of transparency and urgency in addressing stolen assets. While emphasizing the EFFL’s commitment to honest and patriotic leadership, Gonquoi highlighted the need for a more proactive approach in combating corruption within the government. He criticized the delay in initiating asset recovery efforts and called for a more robust strategy to hold corrupt officials accountable.
In conclusion, the EFFL’s steadfast support for President Boakai reflects a dedication to upholding democratic principles and advocating for transparent governance. By standing against the impeachment calls and demanding accountability for past wrongdoings, the EFFL continues to be a vocal champion for integrity and accountability in Liberian politics. Through their actions and statements, the party demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that the government serves the best interests of the Liberian people and remains accountable to its citizens.
