The Government of Liberia, specifically the Ministry of Mines and Energy, appears to be silent on the activities of a Chinese sand mining company that is involved in mining, exporting, or possibly smuggling black sand from Liberia. Recent video footage obtained by the NEW DAWN has exposed the presence of hundreds of bags of black sand collected by Chinese miners in Virginia, Montserrado County, indicating their readiness for export.

A resident of the Waterside community in Virginia reported in the video that Chinese miners regularly export tons of black sandbags from Liberia on a monthly basis. These miners are also involved in beach sand mining and sell the sand to individuals and organizations in the construction industry. The public is now questioning whether the Ministry of Mines and Energy is aware of and has authorized such exportation of black sand.

Authorities from the Ministry of Mines and Energy have stated that they are conducting an investigation into the matter. However, there seems to be a delay or lack of urgency in their response, as complaints from residents continue to escalate. Black sand, also known as magnetite sand or iron ore sand, is a valuable heavy mineral commonly found in coastal areas with various important applications across different industries.

Experts emphasize the significance of black sand in the construction industry, where its high iron content makes it an ideal additive for improving the strength and durability of concrete and asphalt. The magnetic properties of black sand also make it useful for manufacturing magnets used in construction projects. Additionally, the iron oxide content of black sand is essential for steel production through smelting and refining techniques, providing raw material for various industries.

Local residents and landowners affected by the illegal activities of the Chinese miners have expressed concerns about the environmental and economic impact of black sand mining. They view the operations as destructive and call on the government to protect the area from exploitation. The environmental damage caused by black sand mining is particularly troubling, as it threatens the natural ecosystem and economic well-being of the local population.

It is evident that urgent attention and action are needed from the government to address these issues and prevent further exploitation of Liberia’s resources. The destruction of land and environmental degradation caused by illegal mining activities cannot be overlooked, as they jeopardize the livelihoods and future sustainability of the affected communities. It is imperative for the government to intervene and safeguard the interests of the people to ensure the responsible and sustainable utilization of natural resources for the benefit of all.
