The Project Cooperation and Funding Agreement, in collaboration with the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Agriculture and implementing partner Welt Hunger Hilfe, has a value of USD 351,217.00. The project aims to provide basic food assistance to 2,000 children under the age of five who are battling malnutrition in rural Montserrado, Todee District. Additionally, it plans to train thirty Community-Based Nutrition Awareness Teams on best practices in nutrition.

Commenting on the initiative, the Resident Representative of the President of the ECOWAS Commission in Liberia, Amb. Josephine Nkrumah, emphasized that this move is in line with plans to reduce the impact of food insecurity in Liberia. The objectives of the project include providing assistance to strengthen the resilience and recovery of vulnerable children, reducing the effects of food insecurity and malnutrition, distributing fortified cereals for immediate food assistance, and creating awareness about cultural food habits and nutrition-sensitive agricultural practices.

Madam Nkrumah stated, “As an ECOWAS of the people with the vision of peace and prosperity for all, ECOWAS is committed to ensuring the well-being of all community citizens.” She highlighted that the project aligns with the ECOWAS Protocol on Mechanism Relating to Conflict Prevention, Management, Peacekeeping, and Security of Member States.

Dennis Waigbe, officer in charge of the Department of Planning and Development at the Ministry of Agriculture, welcomed the initiative as a timely intervention in addressing the high rate of malnutrition in Todee District. He expressed excitement as a government for the initiative, noting that it complements previous efforts to combat stunting in Liberia.

Hubert Charles, Country Director of Welt Hunger Hilfe in Liberia, assured ECOWAS of full swing implementation of the project. He mentioned that sixty percent of the funds for the first phase of the project have already been received. The parties involved pledged to work together for effective implementation and a positive impact in Todee District.

This collaboration signifies a significant step towards addressing food insecurity and malnutrition in Liberia, particularly in rural areas where vulnerable populations are most affected. With the commitment of all stakeholders involved, it is expected that the project will not only provide immediate relief but also contribute to building long-term resilience and awareness around nutrition practices. The partnership between ECOWAS, the Government of Liberia, Ministry of Agriculture, and Welt Hunger Hilfe demonstrates a unified approach towards achieving sustainable development goals in the region.
