Controversial Montserrado County Electoral District #10 Representative Yekeh Kolubah has recently aligned with opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) lawmaker Frank Saah Foko in a controversial move to push for the impeachment of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai. This decision has raised eyebrows and sparked debates within the political landscape of Liberia.
The CDC-controlled House of Representatives is set to entertain the petition for Boakai’s impeachment, which was drafted and sponsored by Mr. Foko and co-sponsored by Mr. Kolubah. It is worth noting that during the 2023 presidential election, Kolubah initially supported Boakai’s bid for the presidency. However, he quickly shifted his stance and began criticizing Boakai’s leadership style even before the 79-year-old was sworn into office on January 22, 2024.
One of the key incidents that fueled Kolubah’s disdain for Boakai was the accusation that then President-elect Boakai was corrupt for not disclosing the source of LD$10m he had given to fire victims of the Bong County tanker explosion. This marked the beginning of Kolubah’s relentless verbal attacks against Boakai, signaling a souring of their political relationship.
The sudden collaboration between Kolubah and Foko to impeach Boakai has raised questions about political motivations and alliances. Foko accused Boakai of poor leadership management skills and constitutional violations during an interview while on an inspection tour of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority. He claimed that Boakai’s performance in his first month in office was dismal and demonstrated his incapacity to lead the country effectively for the next six years.
Foko specifically criticized Boakai for appointing individuals to tenured positions before their terms had expired, which he deemed as a violation of the Liberian Constitution. He highlighted Boakai’s extensive political experience as Vice President for twelve years and over forty years of government service, questioning his ability to provide effective leadership based on his recent actions.
Kolubah echoed Foko’s sentiments, expressing support for the impeachment bill against Boakai and emphasizing the need for a change in leadership. He accused Boakai of going against the Constitution and the Code of Conduct, arguing that impeachment was necessary to ensure that Boakai does not continue as President. Kolubah boldly stated that it was time for Boakai to become the shortest-serving Liberian President in history through impeachment.
Overall, the collaboration between Kolubah and Foko to impeach President Boakai reflects the shifting political dynamics in Liberia and raises concerns about the motivations behind their actions. As the House of Representatives prepares to entertain the petition for Boakai’s impeachment, the country awaits the outcome of this controversial and divisive political move.
