Criminals in Liberia have escalated their illegal activities to a disturbing level by targeting the deceased. Reports have emerged of graves being broken into, and corpses robbed of their belongings, which are then sold for profit in the local markets. This gruesome practice has shocked and outraged the residents of Ganta City and neighboring areas in Nimba County.
According to a report by Thomas Domah, more than 20 graves have been looted in various cemeteries in Ganta City. The items stolen from these graves, including shoes and clothes, are being openly sold in the local markets and on the streets of Ganta. The desecration of graves has left families traumatized and grieving, as they discover that the final resting places of their loved ones have been disturbed and violated.
The disturbing incident came to light on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, which coincided with National Decoration Day. Many families had gathered at burial sites along the Ganta-Saclepea Highway to clean the graves of their deceased relatives, only to find empty tombs and evidence of looting. The sight of open graves and missing corpses has sent shockwaves across the community, and the perpetrators of this heinous act are yet to be apprehended.
The looted materials, including bones, are reportedly being used by criminals and drug users in Ganta, who smoke them as drugs. This macabre practice has raised concerns among law enforcement officials, with Ganta Police Superintendent Archie Dennis vowing to track down the criminals responsible for these grave robberies. The police are actively investigating the matter and working to ensure the safety and security of the city’s residents.
Acting Mayor Africanus Dolo has also condemned the grave looting and assured the public that measures are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future. He has enlisted the help of young people to clean the cemeteries and has warned criminals, locally known as zogos, to stay away from the grave sites. Dolo emphasized that the people of Ganta have lived in peace for many years without such incidents, and he is determined to maintain the city’s reputation as a safe and respectful community.
The desecration of graves and theft of corpses’ belongings is a deeply disturbing phenomenon that has no place in any society. The residents of Ganta City are united in their grief and outrage over these reprehensible acts, and they are calling for swift justice for the victims and their families. It is imperative that the authorities take decisive action to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure that such crimes are not repeated in the future. The community must come together to protect the sanctity of the deceased and uphold the values of respect and dignity for all.
