President Boakai, less than 25 days away from completing his first 100 days in office, is facing criticism for failing to deliver on his campaign promises. However, former presidential candidate Cllr. Luther Yorfee of the Liberia Rebuilding Party (LRP) has come to his defense, stating that the criticisms are premature.
During his campaign, President Boakai made several promises to the Liberian people as part of his ARREST Agenda, including infrastructure development and road connectivity. He vowed to pave all roads in the country within his first 100 days in office, ensuring that no car would get stuck in the mud, and stabilizing commodity prices.
Speaking at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, Cllr. Yorfee criticized the opposition for starting the countdown to President Boakai’s 100 days. He emphasized that it was unfair to criticize a sitting President who had only been in office for a few months, especially when there were limited resources available for him to work with.
Cllr. Yorfee pointed out that the national budget, a crucial financial tool for the government, had not been passed, leaving President Boakai with limited resources to fulfill his promises. He argued that it was essential to wait until after the budget was approved before assessing the administration’s performance, as the government could only effectively function with a budget in place.
Highlighting the importance of the budget in running the government, Cllr. Yorfee explained that without adequate funding, it would be unreasonable to expect President Boakai to deliver on his promises within the first 100 days. He urged critics to be patient and give the government time to implement its plans once the budget was finalized.
While acknowledging that a portion of the budget had been approved for salaries and expenditures, Cllr. Yorfee emphasized that effective work could only begin after the full budget was passed. He urged critics to hold their peace and allow the government to have the necessary resources to carry out its plans before passing judgment on President Boakai’s performance.
In conclusion, Cllr. Yorfee’s defense of President Boakai highlights the challenges faced by the new administration in fulfilling its campaign promises within the first 100 days. He emphasizes the importance of having a budget in place to support the government’s initiatives and urges critics to be patient and understanding during this transitional period.
