Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe, a prominent Liberian human rights lawyer, has expressed deep concern over a recent incident involving the impoundment of three unauthorized trucks loaded with rice at the Freeport of Monrovia. Several suspects linked to the consignment’s unauthorized exit from the port were also arrested in connection with the incident. The National Port Authorities (NPA) took swift action by arresting seven of its employees and charging them with collusion and facilitation of the unauthorized exit of the trucks.

The trucks were reported to have left the Freeport of Monrovia through the Bravo gate in the early hours of March 6, 2024. The NPA, in line with President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, vowed to leave no stone unturned in investigating the matter and holding those involved accountable. The suspects charged included key staff members such as Shift Commander Robert Yeah, Deputy Commander Charles Weah, and Duty Officer Ezekiel Kollie, among others.

Cllr. Gongloe, in a recent statement, attributed corruption and bad governance in Liberia to ignorance, echoing former President Williams R. Tolbert’s sentiments on the country’s major enemies being poverty, disease, and ignorance. He emphasized the detrimental impact of ignorance on society, pointing out that the lack of knowledge and understanding often leads to repeated mistakes and unethical behavior.

Drawing attention to past atrocities in Liberia, including the assassination of a president and the civil war that claimed thousands of lives, Cllr. Gongloe questioned the rationale behind engaging in corruption despite the devastating consequences of such actions. He underscored the importance of learning from history and avoiding the pitfalls of ignorance to prevent the recurrence of past mistakes.

Cllr. Gongloe’s remarks highlighted the urgent need for education and awareness to combat corruption and promote good governance in Liberia. By addressing the root causes of corruption, such as ignorance and lack of accountability, he emphasized the importance of upholding ethical values and learning from the lessons of the past to build a better future for the country.

In conclusion, Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe’s advocacy for combating corruption through education and awareness serves as a reminder of the critical role that knowledge and understanding play in shaping a just and transparent society. His call for introspection and learning from history underscores the importance of addressing the root causes of corruption to ensure a more equitable and accountable governance system in Liberia.
