China and Liberia have a longstanding partnership that has resulted in tangible benefits for Liberia, including the reconditioning of the new Roberts International Airport Terminal, construction of the University of Liberia Fendell Campus, annexes to the Capitol Building, and the Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf Ministerial Complex. This cooperation was discussed during a meeting between the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Yin Chengwu, and Liberia’s Foreign Minister, Sara Beysolow Nyanti on 4 March 2024 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China Beijing.
The restoration of diplomatic ties between Liberia and China in 2004 was a significant step for Liberia, which had just emerged from a devastating 14-year civil war that had claimed the lives of 250,000 people. The partnership with China has since focused on economic revitalization, infrastructure development, and other key government priorities. Nearly 19 years later, the benefits of this cooperation are visible across Liberia in areas such as education, health, agriculture, and infrastructure.
Ambassador Yin Chengwu commended Foreign Minister Nyanti on her appointment and expressed China’s commitment to strengthening the partnership between the two countries. He emphasized China’s willingness to work with Liberia to enhance political mutual trust and cooperation in various areas. Minister Nyanti, on her part, expressed gratitude for China’s support and reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to improving development, infrastructure, and people-to-people exchanges through the partnership with China.
President Joseph Nyumah Boakai is also committed to enhancing China-Liberia relations and working towards common development goals. The Liberian government values its relationship with China and is willing to collaborate to deepen practical cooperation and achieve mutual benefits. Both parties are eager to work together towards a shared vision of progress and prosperity.
In conclusion, the partnership between China and Liberia has been fruitful and beneficial for both countries. Through collaboration in various sectors, both nations have been able to achieve significant progress in areas such as infrastructure development, education, and healthcare. The commitment to enhancing this partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to building a stronger and more prosperous future for both China and Liberia.
