In November 2008, following a 2006 Technical Assistance Agreement between Liberia and China, a renovated and fully equipped Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) facility was handed over to the Liberian government. This marked the completion of phase one of the LBS refurbishment and expansion project, which had commenced in November 2007 with the support of the People’s Republic of China.

The cost of the LBS expansion project was estimated at US$4 million, and it involved linking the main studio in Monrovia with relay outstations in six different counties in Liberia through microwave satellite links. This expansion significantly expanded the station’s coverage area and improved its ability to reach a larger audience across the country.

Fast forward to March 29, 2024, and the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Mr. Yin Chengwu, has announced the readiness of the Chinese government to commence phase two of the refurbishment and expansion project at LBS. After a closed-door meeting with Liberian Information Minister Mr. Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, Ambassador Yin disclosed the plan for phase two of the project.

The Chinese engineering team is expected to arrive in the country soon to begin the project officially. Ambassador Yin emphasized China’s commitment to supporting Liberia and upholding the China-Liberia relations and the one-China Policy. This gesture underscores the strong partnership between the two countries and reinforces China’s role as a strategic partner for Liberia.

Minister Piah, who chairs the LBS Board of Directors, expressed his delight over China’s continued assistance to LBS and the Government of Liberia in promoting its programs, activities, and achievements to the public. He reaffirmed the Liberian government’s commitment to the one-China Policy and highlighted China’s significance as a strategic partner for Liberia.

The refurbishment and expansion of the LBS facility are crucial for improving the broadcasting infrastructure in Liberia and enhancing the country’s ability to communicate with its citizens across different regions. With the support of China, LBS has been able to modernize its facilities and expand its reach, ensuring that it remains a vital communication tool for the Liberian government and a source of information for the public.

As phase two of the project commences, it is expected that further improvements will be made to the LBS facility, enhancing its capabilities and ensuring that it continues to serve as a reliable source of information and communication for the people of Liberia. The ongoing partnership between Liberia and China in this endeavor exemplifies the strength of their bilateral relations and the mutual benefits that both countries derive from their cooperation in various sectors.
