The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) is calling on President Joseph Nyumah Boakai to take action in establishing the office of the Ombudsman to effectively address constitutional breaches within the country. CENTAL emphasized the importance of having the Office of the Ombudsman operational to investigate potential violations of the Code of Conduct, particularly in relation to political campaigning and canvassing.
The organization highlighted that these breaches could serve as grounds for the removal of individuals from their positions, especially in public integrity institutions like the Governance Commission. At a recent news conference, CENTAL’s program manager, Atty. Gerald D. Yeakula, expressed the belief that without a formal determination by the Ombudsman, those found in violation of the Code of Conduct cannot be lawfully removed.
Yeakula referenced an open letter recently published by CENTAL to President Boakai, outlining key anti-corruption reforms and actions that should be pursued to enhance the country’s anti-corruption efforts. He urged the President to lead by example by disclosing his assets, income, and liabilities to the Liberia Anti-corruption Commission (LACC) and setting a high standard for other officials to follow.
Furthermore, Yeakula called on President Boakai to offer comprehensive support to public integrity institutions, including financial, moral, logistical, and other forms of assistance. He also stressed the importance of investigating and prosecuting former government officials who have been sanctioned for corruption by the US Government.
According to Yeakula, it is crucial for Liberia to uphold the rule of law and prioritize the interests of its citizens over political agendas. He warned against repeating past mistakes and urged for timely action to prevent further disregard for the nation’s democracy, which has been hard-won and continues to grow.
In conclusion, CENTAL’s message to President Boakai is clear: the establishment of the Office of the Ombudsman and the enforcement of anti-corruption measures are essential for maintaining transparency and accountability in Liberia. By addressing constitutional breaches and supporting integrity institutions, the country can move towards a more just and equitable society for all its citizens.
