The Chief Executive Officer of the Liberia Electricity Corporation, Monie Ralph Captan, has been facing intense public criticism for poor electricity services in Liberia. In response to this, Captan has taken on the challenge of connecting over 23 communities to the electricity grid, with the goal of eradicating darkness from the country.

This electrification initiative is part of the GAP Community Electrification Project (G-CEP), which aims to bring electricity to underserved communities in Liberia. The dedication and lighting up ceremony of the G-CEP took place in Law’s Island Community, Banjor, Brewerville, where Captan expressed his commitment to providing electricity to every home in the country.

Captan emphasized the importance of bringing electricity to the people of Liberia, stating that it is their job to ensure that every resident has access to electricity. He assured the nearby community that had engaged with the LEC that they would also receive electricity soon. Captan also mentioned a meeting with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, who expressed his support for the LEC’s efforts to provide electricity to all residents.

Since taking on the role of Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Liberia Electricity Corporation in 2021, Captan has made significant progress in improving the energy sector. The recent lighting up of Law’s Island and Pinyokosa community, comprising over 23 sub-communities, is a testament to this progress.

The project, which began in October 2023 and was completed on March 1, 2024, was implemented by a Liberian contractor, Eco-Civil Company, under the supervision of the LEC. During the dedication ceremony, traditional performances and songs were performed to celebrate the arrival of electricity in the community.

Captan highlighted the negative impact of darkness, citing an increase in crime rates and other harmful activities. He noted that since the community was lit up, businesses were returning and people felt safer walking the streets at night. The community expressed its gratitude by presenting Certificates of Appreciation to Captan and the contractor for their successful implementation of the project.

Mr. Dele I. Shaboyo, Executive Director of Implementing Division at the LEC, reminded the community to prevent power theft and ensure the sustainability of the project. The chairman of the community, Mr. Karina Varney Kamara, expressed excitement about the project and pledged to protect the community from power theft and other crimes.

In conclusion, the Liberia Electricity Corporation, under the leadership of Monie Ralph Captan, is making significant strides in providing electricity to underserved communities in Liberia. With the ongoing efforts of electrifying more communities, the LEC is working towards its goal of eradicating darkness from the country and improving the quality of life for its residents.
