The Booker Washington Institute (BWI) in Kakata, Margibi County recently celebrated the graduation of 452 young men and women who have completed studies in various vocational skills. The graduation ceremony took place on the main campus of BWI on Saturday, February 24, 2024, with a diverse audience including students, parents, BWI Administration and Board, Margibi County authorities, and partners.

The graduates consisted of 234 males and females from the regular secondary T-VET program, 203 from the post-secondary T-VET and professional studies program, and 15 from the domestic science short-term and skill training program, bringing the total to 452 individuals who successfully completed their programs.

These graduates came from different departments within BWI, including the business department offering courses in Accounting, Secretarial Science, and Domestic Science. Others were from the building trade department specializing in plumbing, masonry, and carpentry, the Automotive and Machinery department, Agriculture department, and the Electricity and Electronic departments.

BWI Principal Harris Fumba Tarnue expressed his pride in the graduates, highlighting that they had successfully completed the curriculum set by the Ministry of Education. He also acknowledged the support received from the government and development partners, which enabled the institution to enhance the capacity of its administrative and instructional staff.

Mr. Tarnue mentioned that some staff members were studying in China and anticipated their return. Additionally, eight instructors were pursuing dual master’s programs funded by the European Union and the Swedish Fund under the Youth Rising Program at Han University in Finland. Furthermore, T-VET instructors who had undergone training in countries like Kenya, Zambia, and South Africa had returned with specialized skills in automotive, carpentry, machinery, and information technology, among others.

Named in honor of the late Afro-American scholar and educator, BWI stands as Liberia’s premier technical and vocational institution, established in 1929 under the administration of late President Charles Dunbar Burgess King. The commitment to providing quality vocational education and skills training remains at the core of BWI’s mission and vision.

As BWI continues to produce competent graduates in various vocational fields, it plays a crucial role in contributing to the overall development of Liberia by equipping its citizens with practical skills and knowledge that are essential for the country’s growth and prosperity. The impact of BWI extends beyond its campus, reaching communities and industries that benefit from the expertise and professionalism of its graduates.

In conclusion, the graduation ceremony at BWI symbolizes not just an academic achievement but also a commitment to excellence in technical and vocational education. The institution’s dedication to nurturing talent and fostering a culture of innovation and skill development sets a benchmark for vocational institutions across Liberia and beyond. With the support of stakeholders and partners, BWI continues to empower young men and women, thereby shaping a brighter future for the nation.
