For the latest updates, we have received news that President Joseph Nyumah Boakai of Liberia has nominated a historic number of officials in one night. This decision by President Boakai seems to be a response to the long-standing criticisms that he had been too slow in forming his cabinet. This bold move occurred on Monday night, 19 February 2024, with the nomination of 139 officials to lead different government ministries and agencies. This is the highest single nomination list released since his ascendancy to the presidency on 22 January 2024.
At the start of his nomination of officials, President Boakai had been slow in introducing new appointees to his cabinet, often taking his time in vetting potential nominees. This method of carefully selecting officials had left the public eagerly awaiting to know who their new officials would be. However, his recent decision to nominate 139 officials in a single night has taken everyone by surprise.
The nominations have affected several line Ministries and Agencies. There have been significant nominations at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Local Government, Health, Liberia Immigration Service, Education, Information, Culture & Tourism, Youth & Sports, Post & telecommunications, Transport, Labor, State for Presidential Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Public Works, Finance, Liberia Telecommunications Authority, Liberia Telecommunications Corporation, National Insurance Company of Liberia, National Road Fund of Liberia, Liberia Agriculture Commodity Regulatory Authority, Liberia Petroleum Regulatory Authority, National Port Authority, Environment Protection Agency, National Transit Authority, National Lottery Authority, National Housing Authority, Governance Commission, Liberia Agency For Community Empowerment (LACE), Civil Service Agency, Liberia Airport Authority, Liberia Refugee, Repatriation & Resettlement Commission, National Bureau of Concessions, National Public Health Institute of Liberia, Central Agricultural Research Institute, National Disaster Management Agency, Liberia Intellectual Property Office, National AIDS Commission, National Identification Registry, General Services Agency, National Fire Service, Center for National Documents & Records, Liberia Water & Sewer Corporation, WASH Commission, and Ministry of Agriculture.
Notable nominations include Samuel Brown as Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Stephen Zargo as Commissioner General of the Liberia Immigration Service, and Amos Fulley as Deputy Minister for Instructions at the Ministry of Education. The nominations cover a wide range of government sectors and demonstrate the commitment of President Boakai to strengthen his administration.
This significant number of nominations in a single night has sparked both support and criticism from various quarters. While some have applauded President Boakai for taking decisive action to form his cabinet, others have raised concerns about the thoroughness of the vetting process for such a large number of officials in a short period of time.
It remains to be seen how these nominations will impact the governance of Liberia and whether the new officials will be able to effectively carry out their duties. As Liberia continues on its path of development and progress, the successful appointments and performances of these officials will be closely monitored by the public and the international community.
