“My Soul is a Witness” is a historical novel that offers a unique perspective on the Holocaust, told through the eyes of an African woman deported to Auschwitz. Written by Gabriel Souleyka, this novel follows the story of Awa and Ibrahim, a couple who must navigate the tragedies of World War II.

Set in 1939, the story begins with Awa and Ibrahim celebrating their wedding. However, their joy is short-lived as war breaks out and Ibrahim is sent to fight in France. When he disappears in 1940, leaving Awa devastated, she is determined to find him at all costs. Awa follows the rector of the Paris mosque to Dakar and eventually arrives in Paris in 1942, seeking information about Ibrahim’s fate. While in Paris, she joins the resistance at the Paris Mosque and helps shelter Jews hiding from persecution.

Tragedy strikes on July 16, 1942, when Awa is arrested for wearing a yellow star and deported to Auschwitz along with a thousand others. In the horrors of the camp, Awa miraculously reunites with Ibrahim, who has been interned for a year. Together, they must find the strength to survive and bear witness to the atrocities of the Holocaust.

“My Soul is a Witness” goes beyond being just a historical novel; it is a heartfelt story of courage, love, and resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity. The novel highlights the solidarity and brotherhood between Jews, Muslims, and Christians in the face of Nazi barbarism. It is a poignant reminder of the human capacity for compassion and resistance in the darkest of times.
