The World Water Day Football and Kickball Championship is set to take place in Montserrado County, with sixteen high schools participating in this global observance on March 22, 2024. Organized by WaterAid Liberia in collaboration with the Government of Liberia and other WASH stakeholders, the aim of the championship is to raise awareness about safe water access, hygiene, and sanitation. The theme for this year’s event is “Water for Peace.”
The sixteen high schools participating in the championship include defending champions Nathan E. Gibson, World Wide Mission, Gray D. Allison, Carver Mission Academy, Amos T. Warner, St. Simon Baptist, Kings and Queens International School, A.M. Fofana, New Destiny Christian High School, Kendeja High School, First Assembly of God, Muslim Congress, Barnersville Public High School, James Doe Young, St. Michael High School, and Elizabeth Tubman Memorial Institute (ETMI).
The games will be held at four different venues from March 18 to March 21, 2024, including Right To Play Field, Alpha Field, Stephen Tolbert Field, and Slipway Field. In addition to the games, there will be an essay competition involving over 1,500 students from the participating high schools, focusing on the government’s role in promoting the WASH program for water and peace. Furthermore, WASH stakeholders will conduct an interactive session with students from Gray D. Allison High School to support the “Water Action Month” campaign.
Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the champions in both football and kickball, while the runners-up will receive cash prizes. Additionally, the winner of the Best Essay competition will receive a cash prize, and their high school will be awarded a trophy.
The championship, in its 2nd edition, is organized by National High School Sports, an organization dedicated to promoting sports and education as essential components for youth development. The organization has previously worked on similar projects with partners such as the National Malaria Control Program/Global Fund, Ministry of Finance, UNESCO, WaterAid Liberia, Central Bank of Liberia, Liberia Telecommunication Authority, and The Last Well. National High School Sports previously organized the first-ever nationwide High School Football and Kickball Championship in Liberia in 2017.
Overall, the World Water Day Football and Kickball Championship serves as a platform to not only showcase sporting talent but also to raise awareness about the importance of water access, sanitation, and hygiene for peace and development. Through collaboration between various stakeholders, this event aims to inspire positive change in communities and empower young people to become advocates for clean water and sanitation.
