The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) has appointed Mr. Woochong Um as its new Chief Executive Officer. This announcement comes as GEAPP continues its mission to address energy poverty and the climate crisis through a transition to renewable energy. Mr. Um brings a wealth of experience from his previous role at the Asian Development Bank, where he focused on global partnerships and funding mechanisms to drive sustainable transformations.
Ravi Venkatesan, Chair of the GEAPP Board, expressed his excitement about Mr. Um’s appointment, highlighting his leadership qualities and commitment to the alliance’s mission. Since its launch in 2021, GEAPP has made significant progress, investing in numerous projects across different regions and building a strong network of partners. The alliance has already made a positive impact, reducing CO2 emissions, connecting millions of people to clean energy, and supporting jobs and livelihoods.
Founding partners of GEAPP, including the IKEA Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation, have also expressed their support for Mr. Um’s appointment. They believe that his experience in building coalitions and driving social and environmental impact at scale will be instrumental in advancing the alliance’s goals. Dr. Rajiv J. Shah from The Rockefeller Foundation emphasized the importance of transitioning away from fossil fuels and ensuring that renewable energy is accessible to all communities.
Mr. Um’s appointment follows a rigorous selection process and marks a new phase for GEAPP. He will take over from the interim CEO, Joseph Ng’ang’a, who has played a key role in advancing the alliance’s work across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. GEAPP is committed to scaling up its efforts, strengthening partnerships, and fostering a more inclusive and resilient future for all.
As GEAPP looks to the future, its focus remains on driving innovation and accessibility in the energy transition, especially in emerging markets. The alliance aims to continue its growth and catalytic impact under Mr. Um’s leadership, working closely with partners to deliver greater benefits for people and the planet. Dr. Andrew Steer from the Bezos Earth Fund expressed confidence in Mr. Um’s ability to accelerate the energy transition in developing countries, enabling better access to power for families and businesses.
Overall, GEAPP is dedicated to reducing carbon emissions, expanding clean energy access, and creating new job opportunities. With support from philanthropic partners and a shared commitment to a just energy transition, GEAPP is paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous future.
