African Risk Capacity (ARC) is set to host a gathering of key partners in the climate and food security sectors in Africa. Scheduled to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, on the 7th and 8th of May 2024, the meeting aims to address pressing issues surrounding climate change and food security on the continent.
The importance of Africa’s role in finding solutions to combat the effects of climate change, promoting adaptation, and enhancing resilience in vulnerable communities cannot be understated. Recent developments from various climate change summits, such as the Conference of Parties (COP) discussions and the Africa Climate Summit, have laid the groundwork for decisive action. Notably, the establishment of the Loss and Damage Fund during COP 27 marked a significant milestone for developing nations disproportionately affected by climate change.
Building upon this momentum, the upcoming roundtable discussion seeks to further elaborate on the proposed framework of the Fund over two days. The goal is to facilitate coordinated climate action, foster crucial conversations, and explore innovative solutions to address the challenges posed by climate change. The roundtable will provide a platform for stakeholders to articulate the demand for resources, identify opportunities, address implementation hurdles, share experiences, develop innovative solutions, explore collaboration opportunities, and mobilize additional resources.
As preparations are underway for COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan later this year, the Africa Climate Roundtable presents an opportunity for African leaders to unite and amplify their voices on matters of climate resilience and adaptation. The event will bring together representatives from African Union organs, regional bodies, UN agencies, donor partners, technical experts, the private sector, and civil society organizations to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaboration.
The convening partners of the African Climate Roundtable include esteemed organizations such as Afreximbank, African Adaptation Initiative, African Capacity Building Foundation, African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, Global Green Growth Institute, UN Habitat, and the United Nations World Food Programme. This collective effort underscores the importance of cross-sector collaboration in addressing the complex challenges posed by climate change in Africa.

With a diverse array of participants and stakeholders coming together to tackle pressing issues, the Africa Climate Roundtable holds promise for driving meaningful change and fostering cooperation across borders and sectors. Through dialogue, collaboration, and innovative solutions, Africa can navigate the challenges of climate change and food security, building a more resilient and sustainable future for generations to come.
