At least 178 at-risk youth in Liberia have completed a rehabilitation program and are preparing to graduate in the next two weeks. The program, initiated by the Government of Liberia in collaboration with the One UN System in Liberia, aims to provide essential life skills, education, and support to reintegrate at-risk youth into society positively.

The rehabilitation program was launched on June 30, 2022, as part of a larger initiative to address the challenges faced by youthful Liberians who are addicted to drugs. The program received a boost when former President Weah launched a US$13 million rehabilitation program in 2022, with the goal of assisting 500 individuals per year through counseling sessions, vocational training, educational workshops, and recreational activities tailored to meet their specific needs.

Over the course of several months, the rehabilitation program, spearheaded by local authorities in collaboration with community organizations and NGOs, has made significant progress in addressing the root causes of delinquency and providing comprehensive support to participants. According to Dr. Gborbee G. Logan, Liberia was grappling with 47,917 at-risk youth, and the program has conducted mapping exercises and assessments to identify and support these individuals.

The National Steering Committee for the At-Risk Youth program began the recruitment process on August 21, documenting 105 at-risk youths, including 88 males and 17 females. The impending graduation ceremony marks a significant milestone for the graduates, signifying their successful completion of the rehabilitation program and their readiness to embrace a brighter future.

The graduation ceremony stands as a beacon of hope, symbolizing the transformative power of rehabilitation and the promise of a brighter future for all. Dr. Jallah also revealed that they have trained a total of 105 persons in prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services to address the drug situation and at-risk youth across the country.

The graduation of these 178 at-risk youth serves as shining examples of resilience, determination, and the potential for positive change within every individual. It also underscores the importance of investing in rehabilitation programs to support vulnerable youth and foster safer, more inclusive communities. This achievement not only signifies personal growth and achievement but also represents a step forward in creating a more supportive and enabling environment for at-risk youth in Liberia.
