Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has called on Kenyans to mourn the late Kelvin Kiptum with respect, following the tragic accident that claimed his life on the Eldoret Ravine road on Sunday night. The Sports CS paid a visit to the family of the deceased World Marathon Record holder in Chepsamo, Kaptarakwa ward, Keiyo South constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet county. He later viewed Kiptum’s body at Eldoret Hospital, where he urged for calm during the mourning period of the athlete.
During his visit, the CS described the late athlete as a star athlete and a confident and humble young man with big dreams in the athletics circles and for the country. He expressed that Kiptum was full of big dreams, and the most memorable thing about him was his belief that he was just starting and that the future ahead of him was full of promise. He was seen as a very confident young man who had a strong attachment to his family. The CS promised that the government would stand with the family during this mourning period.
The CS also emphasized that Kiptum was a role model to young athletes and other sportspeople. He appealed to the entire world to stand with the family during this difficult time. He further stated that Kiptum was one of the world’s finest sportsmen, always ready to handle all barriers and obstacles in his life.
Accompanied by Sports PS Peter Tum, the CS expressed overwhelming grief upon arriving at the morgue. The entire Eldoret Hospital was engulfed in a sombre mood upon the arrival of the body of the deceased athlete. In addition, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii cautioned Kenyans against speculating about the athlete’s death on social media. He urged the public to allow the police to investigate and reveal the facts surrounding the tragic accident.
The tragic passing of Kelvin Kiptum is a major loss to the Kenyan athletics community and to the nation as a whole. Authorities are working towards a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the accident, while the government has pledged its support to the family during this difficult time.
