The US Embassy in Maseru, through Charge d’Affaires Keisha Toms, has expressed its appreciation for the increasing participation of women in decision-making processes in Lesotho. Toms commended the country for its efforts in empowering women and allowing them to take up leadership roles.

During the US Embassy’s annual Women’s History Month celebration at the State Library in Maseru, Toms highlighted the value of women’s involvement in decision-making. She pointed out that Lesotho has made significant progress in promoting gender equality by appointing women to key leadership positions such as Deputy Prime Minister Nthomeng Majara, Senate President ‘Mamonaheng Mokitimi, and Finance Minister Retselisitsoe Matlanyane.

Toms encouraged women in Lesotho to aspire to leadership positions and contribute to the country’s development. The event, themed “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion,” aimed to honor Basotho women’s achievements, address the challenges they face, and inspire collective efforts to overcome obstacles.

Women’s History Month, according to Toms, is dedicated to recognizing the accomplishments, contributions, and struggles of women throughout history. The event served as a tribute to women who have fought for equality, justice, and opportunity, as well as those who have played pivotal roles in various social, economic, and political movements.

The celebration also featured influential women panelists from diverse sectors, including Dr. Itumeleng Buti, Auditor-General ‘Mathabo Makenete, former High Commissioner to the UK Rethabile Mokaeane, Budget Controller Maleshoane Lekomola, and other businesswomen. These women shared their experiences and emphasized the importance of empowering women and girls in various areas, such as financial inclusion and political participation.

Makenete stressed the need to enhance financial literacy and access for women, urging them to take control of their financial well-being. She highlighted the importance of utilizing technology and financial services to achieve self-empowerment.

Mokaeane encouraged more women to join politics and take advantage of the opportunities available to them. She emphasized the need for increased women representation in parliament and urged young women to actively participate in decision-making processes for societal development.

In conclusion, the event celebrated the achievements of Basotho women, recognized their resilience and potential, and called for continued efforts to promote gender equality and empower women in Lesotho. The US Embassy’s support for women’s participation in leadership roles reflects its commitment to fostering inclusive and diverse societies globally.
