Mukuru, a financial services platform, is urging Basotho in the diaspora to utilize their secure mobile money transfer service when sending money back home. This is to protect them from being robbed of their hard-earned cash. Over the years, Mukuru has gained popularity as a trusted platform for the African diaspora to send money to their loved ones in their home countries.
The company recently participated in an event at a major mine in South Africa’s Free State province, organized by Lesotho’s High Commission in South Africa. The event was in commemoration of the country’s bicentennial celebrations and Moshoeshoe Day, held every 11th of March. Representatives from Standard Bank, co-sponsors of the event alongside Mukuru, were also present.
Likhapha Seliane, the Consul General of Lesotho in Johannesburg, highlighted the significance of celebrating Moshoeshoe’s Day in Welkom, where a majority of Basotho migrants in South Africa reside and work. The event took place at Masimong Shaft Five, a mine owned by the Harmony group in Welkom, showcasing Mukuru’s money transfer services and life cover products.
Maleseli Mohapinyane, the Country Manager for Mukuru, emphasized the importance of financial literacy among Basotho in South Africa to prevent them from falling victim to scams when sending money back home. Mukuru, as a safe and reliable platform, aims to educate them on how to use their services effectively.
Mohapinyane stated that Mukuru’s primary goal is to facilitate secure money transfers between individuals globally, with added services like funeral cover for registered members. She highlighted the ease of registration with Mukuru, requiring only a national identity or passport number, and assured fast, secure, and cost-effective transfers.
Keketso Makara, the Commercial Manager of Standard Lesotho Bank (SLB), expressed their commitment to connecting with Basotho in the diaspora and providing tailored financial products to meet their needs. He stressed the importance of saving hard-earned money in Lesotho to support families and contribute to the country’s economy.
The event also marked the collaboration between Lesotho’s High Commission and Mara a Basotho, a Basotho group based in South Africa, during Moshoeshoe’s Day celebrations. Plans were discussed to expand the celebrations to include Basotho in other regions like Klerksdorp or Rustenburg to ensure all Basotho in the diaspora are included.
Overall, the event served as a platform for educating Basotho in the diaspora about safe money transfer options, financial literacy, and the importance of saving and investing in Lesotho. Mukuru and Standard Lesotho Bank reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Basotho communities and providing them with reliable financial services.
