Hopolang Mokhopi, The collaborative effort of the Lesotho Blood Transfusion Service (LBTS) and Care Bond Donor Club (CBDC) has resulted in the collection of 7500 pints of blood during a blood donation drive held in Ha Mabote, Berea, in celebration of Moshoeshoe Day. This effort was in response to calls to help cancer patients who often need blood transfusions. The shortage of blood in the country has been a struggle for cancer patients, as some types of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy can damage bone marrow, reducing red blood cell and platelet production. Additionally, the cancer itself or surgical operations often require blood.
LBTS and CBDC joined hands in the blood collection drive to address this shortage. LBTS phlebotomist, Litṧitso Rabale, mentioned that the collected 7500 pints would help meet the huge demand for blood in Lesotho, especially among cancer patients. She highlighted that nearly one-quarter of the nation’s blood supply goes to patients fighting cancer, emphasizing the vital role blood donors play in their care. Ms. Rabale urged people to donate blood voluntarily, as there are no incentives in return.
The rate at which people are seeking blood donations on social media indicates the seriousness of the blood shortage in hospitals, according to Ms. Rabale. The persistent blood shortage threatens the lives of countless individuals in critical need of transfusions due to accidents, surgeries, childbirth, and various other medical conditions.
Ha Mabote Chieftainess, ‘Mabohlokoa Majara, initially had a phobia of donating blood but was compelled to become a blood donor after understanding how blood saves lives. She emphasized the importance of being prepared and willing to donate, as one never knows when a loved one might need blood for survival. One of the blood donors, Lebohang Mohai, expressed his motivation for donating blood as a way to help patients survive.
Overall, the collaboration between LBTS and CBDC in organizing the blood donation drive in Ha Mabote has been instrumental in addressing the shortage of blood in Lesotho, particularly for cancer patients in need of transfusions. The success of the drive in collecting 7500 pints of blood reflects the community’s willingness to support those in need and emphasizes the crucial role of voluntary blood donors. This united effort serves as a reminder of the importance of regular blood donations in saving lives and supporting individuals in critical need of transfusions.
