The Lagos State government recently held a town hall meeting to gather the input of residents in policy formulation and implementation. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led the meeting, which provided an opportunity for Lagosians, particularly those from the Lagos West Senatorial District, to voice their needs and concerns. The significance of this civic engagement between the government and the people is paramount, especially considering the economic prowess and population of Lagos, making it one of the most important cities in Nigeria and West Africa.

The residents of Lagos raised several far-reaching demands at the meeting. Some of these demands included the need for special status for Lagos in the federation, the establishment of a state police force, a state-owned airline, a better road network, and the involvement of traditional rulers in advisory councils. Additionally, Lagosians sought the creation of a department for early intervention for children born with a disability, physiotherapy units in primary healthcare facilities, an ultra-modern library, and initiatives to encourage young people to engage in research and learning.

Various stakeholders at the meeting expressed their views. Lagos State Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Stephen Adegbite, emphasized the need for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to address traffic rule offenders and the issue of abandoned federal buildings. The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Shotobi, called for urgent action against insecurity, advocating for the establishment of state policing.

Governor Sanwo-Olu responded to these demands and concerns. He assured that the state government is actively working on various issues, including the establishment of a state-owned airline and the construction of the Fourth Mainland Bridge. He also discussed the importance of vocational and skills acquisition programs to alleviate poverty and promote financial sustainability. The governor emphasized the government’s commitment to make it easier for citizens to obey laws and contribute to the growth of Lagos.

The town hall meeting witnessed testimonials from beneficiaries of state government programs, including Mr. Abiola Adepoju, who expressed gratitude for the 2022 skill capacity program for artisans and tradesmen. The meeting concluded with a commitment from the state government to continue engaging with residents and striving to address challenges while working towards a better future for Lagos.
