Kenyatta University (KU) Titans secured a surprising 1-0 victory against defending champions Strathmore Scorpions University at the City Park Hockey Stadium in Nairobi, helping them avoid relegation as the women’s Kenya Hockey Union Premier League reached its conclusion. Ivy Mung’ole’s goal in the 20th minute proved to be the difference, securing KU’s second win of the season.

Before the weekend matches, KU, University of Nairobi of Nairobi (UoN), and Dutch Flower Group Wolverines were all in danger of relegation. However, KU’s win against Scorpions ensured their survival in the league, sparing them from the drop. The Titans, led by coach Richard Wandera, were relieved to have secured their spot in the Premier League for the next season.

The development meant that Wolverines, previously third from the bottom with eight points from 14 matches, slid down to second from the last position. Consequently, they will join bottom-placed UoN in being relegated to the second tier at the conclusion of the 2023 season on February 25 at the City Park Stadium.

Following the victory, Coach Wandera expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their patience and hard work. He emphasized the importance of survival in the Premier League and applauded the team’s efforts.

The result also meant that Scorpions missed the opportunity to move up to third place on the table. The top three positions remained unchanged, with Champions in Waiting Blazers leading the standings with 31 points from 12 matches, followed by Lakers and USIU-A in second and third place, respectively.

In the men’s Premier League, reigning champions Butali Sugar Warriors secured a hard-earned 2-1 victory over rivals Kenya Police, maintaining their title defense campaign on course. George Mutira and Shammah Adondoa scored for Butali, while Benson Wahongo pulled one back for Kenya Police.

Additionally, in the National League, Daystar University’s Abel Ladema scored the lone goal in their match, Rift Pirates played to a draw against Karate Axiom, and Technical University of Kenya (TUK) came from behind to beat Park Road Tigers 2-1.

The top two teams in the Super League for both genders at the end of the season earn promotion to the Premier League, while the bottom two teams are relegated to the second tier. The intense competition and exciting matches continue to showcase the talent and determination of the hockey teams in Kenya.
