Kenya suffered a tragic loss when its military chief, General Francis Ogolla, was among 10 individuals who perished in a helicopter crash shortly after take-off. The unfortunate incident occurred as the aircraft, which had been visiting troops deployed in northwest Kenya to address cattle-rustling issues, went down just moments after departing from Cheptulel Boys Secondary School in West Pokot County. President William Ruto confirmed the news and expressed his condolences for the loss.
Despite the tragedy, two soldiers managed to survive the crash and were hospitalized for their injuries. An air investigation team was dispatched to determine the cause of the crash, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
During a press conference, President Ruto reflected on the loss of General Ogolla, describing him as one of the nation’s bravest generals. Tragically, the northwest region of Kenya has been plagued by unrest, leading to the loss of numerous civilian and police lives. The recent incident involving the helicopter crash further underscores the risks and challenges faced by military personnel and civilians operating in volatile areas. Additionally, the country mourned the loss of 10 soldiers in a similar helicopter crash near Nairobi in June 2021, highlighting the dangers inherent in military operations.
