Kenyan Athletes Dominate Lagos City Marathon

The 9th edition of the Access Bank/Lagos City Marathon took place yesterday and Kenyan athletes once again solidified their dominance in long-distance races. The Kenyan athletes claimed victories in the men’s category of the 42-kilometer race and also secured second and third place in the women’s category. The race started at the National Stadium in Surulere and concluded at Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island. Despite the challenging humidity, the marathon ran its full course without any issues.

The Kenyan runners, Silas Cheprot, Geoffrey Birge, and Bernard Sang emerged as leaders in the men’s race, with Sang ultimately clinching the title with a time of 2.16.15. Although there were no new records set, the marathon organizers were praised for delivering a successful and well-organized event.

In the women’s race, Urisa Kebene of Ethiopia prevented a complete Kenyan sweep, finishing with a time of 2.41.01secs. The Kenyan runners Margaret Agai and Sharon Jemtal Cherop secured the second and third positions, respectively, in the women’s category.

The Kenyan delegation expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of the marathon, despite the challenging weather conditions. The first Nigerian man to finish was Adamu Sheu Muazu, with Deborah Pam being the first Nigerian woman to cross the finish line.

The winners of the race, both men and women, received $30,000, with the runners-up and subsequent finishers also earning cash prizes. Nigerian athletes who achieved top positions were also rewarded with monetary prizes. The race attracted athletes from various countries, as well as refugee runners, and featured a 10-kilometer race alongside the main marathon event.

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Engr. Obafemi Hamzat, commended the organizers and Access Bank for their efforts in putting together a successful marathon. He expressed the state government’s continued support for the development of long-distance races. Herbert Wigwe, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank, also praised the marathon’s success and the significant achievements it has led to.

The Access Bank/Lagos City Marathon has become a prominent event, drawing international attention and fostering an atmosphere of self-discovery and achievement. The marathon aims to continue growing and achieving global recognition, with the support of both the local and international running community.
