The Zuri Foundation recently announced the recipients of the 2024 Zuri Awards, which honor the exceptional achievements of unsung women in advance of International Women’s Day. Norah Muthoni Mumo, the Chief Executive of the Zuri Foundation, emphasized the goal of the awards to recognize, celebrate, and support outstanding women who are dedicated to creating positive change in their communities. These women demonstrate exceptional leadership, resilience, and courage in the face of adversity, inspiring others along the way. The ultimate vision is to create a gender-equal and inclusive world where differences are valued and celebrated.

The Zuri Awards align with the 5th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on Gender Equality, reflecting the Foundation’s commitment to recognizing these unsung heroes. This year marks the 8th edition of the Zuri Awards, highlighting the ongoing dedication to honoring women who make a difference in their communities. Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, speaking on behalf of Hon. Aisha Jumwa Katana, the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Gender, Culture, The Arts, and Heritage, praised the initiative for its role in highlighting and rewarding women’s contributions to gender equality and the overall development of society.

Women play a crucial role in the economy, driving growth, innovation, and job creation. Their influence extends beyond the economic sphere to education and nurturing the future generation. Beatrice Malika, the founder of Glory Christian Education and Rescue Centre, a previous recipient of the Zuri Awards, expressed her gratitude for the Foundation’s support. The Zuri Awards have provided opportunities for networking, donations, and empowerment that directly benefit the children at the center.

In a significant development, the Senate passed a bill addressing the care and protection of child parents, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing key issues affecting women and children. Dr. Stephen Jackson, the Resident Coordinator of United Nations Women, highlighted the importance of supporting women’s leadership for national development. Empowering women’s leadership is crucial for achieving sustainable development goals and building stronger communities.

At the Zuri Awards event, several women were recognized for their excellence in various fields. Grace Nyokabi of The Soil Inventory received an award for excellence in Agriculture, while Matrid James’s Dada Trust was honored in the Arts, Culture, and Entertainment category. Other recipients included Nusrat Mohammed of Pwani Animal Welfare CBO for Education, Angela Wawire of Femmegreen for Environmental Sustainability, and Christine Miloyo of Stand Out for Mental Health for Healthcare.

The event brought together government officials, development partners, stakeholders, and advocates to celebrate the achievements of women and explore opportunities for collaboration and impact. The Zuri Awards serve as a platform to showcase the remarkable contributions of women in society and inspire others to follow in their footsteps. By recognizing and supporting unsung heroes, the Zuri Foundation is playing a vital role in promoting gender equality and creating a more inclusive world for all.
