Four Kenyan companies have recently received a significant boost of Ksh58 million (USD400,000) from the United States’ Power Africa program to support female farmers in gaining access to clean energy solutions. The Power Africa program, in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), announced the selection of these four companies for their efforts in promoting projects led by women.

The beneficiaries of this funding include Agsol, which will provide a pay-as-you-use financing solution for solar-powered mills, and Ecobora, which plans to equip 30 rural solar-powered kiosks with refrigerators to help women store and sell goods. Rafode, a microfinance institution, intends to use the funds to offer lease-to-own contracts for products like water pumps, while Sidai aims to introduce solar-powered mills tailored for poultry farmers.

Power Africa noted that female farmers in Kenya face challenges related to asset ownership, often due to cultural norms and practices. While the number of female farmers is on the rise in the country, many struggle to afford supplies for their farms and have limited access to information and training opportunities. The grants provided by Power Africa are designed to introduce innovative solutions to make productive energy technology more affordable for women, raise awareness about its benefits, and help women develop business skills.

In addition to supporting Kenyan companies, Power Africa has also awarded grants totaling Ksh98 million ($670,000) to five solar energy companies in Liberia. The goal of these grants is to increase access to renewable energy-powered appliances and technologies in the region. Beneficiary companies in Liberia include EcoPower, Liberian Energy Network Two, and Liberia Engineering & Geo-Tech Consultants, working on projects ranging from expanding solar franchises to financing solar-crop dryers.

Power Africa is a US Government-led initiative aimed at expanding electricity access across Sub-Saharan Africa. By supporting innovative projects and initiatives that promote clean energy solutions, Power Africa is helping to empower female farmers, improve access to energy technologies, and stimulate economic growth in the region. Through partnerships and collaboration with local businesses and organizations, Power Africa is working towards a more sustainable and inclusive energy future for African communities.
