Two young people lost their lives on Tuesday, February 20, in Marachi, Busia, following a tragic confrontation with the police. The individuals were part of the Marachi Jobless Youths, a group that had taken to the streets to protest against Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, whom they believed was neglecting their needs and concerns.
The primary issue that fueled their anger was the alarming rate of unemployment in the area, which they claimed had reached unprecedented levels. This had led to frustration and desperation among the youth who felt abandoned by the government and local leadership.
The youth had been engaged in a tense standoff with the police for the third consecutive day, prompting County Commissioner Mwachaunga Chaunga to step in and address the situation. However, the protesters were cautioned against causing disruptions to public peace and business activities in the region.
In defense of their actions, the youth argued that the governor had failed to fulfill his obligations as per a previously agreed Memorandum of Understanding with them. Additionally, residents accused the governor of excluding them from important governmental meetings and the allocation of trading kiosks in Busia town.
One resident recounted how their kiosks were demolished with promises of modern shops being built in their place, only for the spaces to be allocated and sold to wealthy individuals in the area. Another resident shared a distressing story of their spouse being taken away by police from a hospital while bleeding profusely from gunshot wounds, never to be seen again.
County Commissioner Mwachaunga Chaunga assured the community that those responsible for the violence would be dealt with, and pledged to coordinate with law enforcement to enhance security measures in the area. He emphasized the importance of peaceful dialogue and collaboration between the public and the government to address grievances and challenges constructively.
In a related development, reports emerged of bandit attacks that resulted in the deaths of five individuals in Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, and Samburu counties. In one instance, bandits ambushed and killed a 59-year-old man in Baringo North and two others in Marakwet East before making off with their livestock.
Law enforcement agencies, including a contingent of police officers, were deployed to the affected areas to apprehend the bandits and restore order. The incidents highlighted the need for enhanced security measures and proactive community engagement to address the underlying causes of conflict and violence in the region.
In conclusion, the tragic events in Marachi and other counties serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of effective governance, community empowerment, and security collaboration in ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens. It is imperative for authorities to listen to the concerns of the people, address their grievances, and work towards sustainable solutions to prevent such tragic incidents from reoccurring.
