TV47 has quickly made a name for itself in the competitive Kenyan media landscape, as evidenced by its recent ranking among the top four most-watched TV stations in the country, according to a new report from Infotrak. Despite being launched in 2019, TV47 managed to secure a spot in the top five, trailing behind industry giants Citizen TV, NTV, and KTN.

Citizen TV continues to dominate the market with an impressive 90 percent of respondents confirming that they watch the station regularly. NTV follows closely behind with 61 percent, while KTN Home, TV47, and KBC each garnered 52 percent, 32 percent, and 32 percent respectively. On the other hand, K24 TV landed in sixth place with 22 percent, followed by KTN News at 18 percent.

The report also highlighted the popularity of vernacular TV station Inooro TV, which claimed the eighth spot, with Ramogi and Kiss TV following close behind. TV47 attributed its success to a lineup of talented hosts such as Willis Raburu, Fred Indimuli, and Liz Mutuku, who have played a significant role in boosting the station’s viewership.

The report indicated that the majority of TV47’s audience falls within the 18-26 age bracket, with coverage extending to all 47 counties in Kenya. In the radio category, Radio Citizen maintained its lead with a 26 percent market share, trailed by Radio Jambo at 24 percent and Radio 47 at 20 percent. Radio Maisha and Milele FM secured the fourth and fifth positions respectively, with Classic 105 rounding out the top six.

In a separate report by the Communications Authority of Kenya, it was noted that radio audiences have been on a downward trend since 2014, while TV audiences have remained steady. The number of radio stations has doubled from 120 to 228, TV stations have increased from 6 to 182, and newspapers have seen a modest rise from 9 to 13 within the same period.

Despite the decline in radio consumption from 92 percent in 2014 to 77 percent in 2023, TV consumption has risen from 46 percent to 74 percent, and digital news consumption has surged from 27 percent to 57 percent. However, newspaper readership has dwindled significantly from 21 percent to 7 percent.

The data from the Communications Authority also revealed that TV stations have consistently raked in the highest advertising revenues, surpassing radio and newspapers. TV stations have been receiving upwards of Ksh3 billion in advertising revenue monthly since January 2023, while radio stations have been averaging between Ksh1.4 billion to Ksh1.8 billion. Newspapers, on the other hand, have been receiving advertising revenue in the range of Ksh450 million to Ksh700 million.

Overall, the media landscape in Kenya is evolving, with TV stations attracting the lion’s share of advertising revenue, indicating a shifting preference among consumers for visual content over traditional print and radio media.
