Road safety players have introduced an electronic sticker designed to enhance road safety and reduce fatalities in Kenya. The Road Safety Association of Kenya (RSAK) Chairman, David Njoroge, announced the launch of the digital system at a press conference on Wednesday, March 6.

The e-sticker is equipped with speed limiters, allowing law enforcement officers to easily identify traffic law violators. Once installed on a vehicle, the system electronically detects details such as the vehicle’s make, registration number, ownership, and chassis number.

Njoroge commended the system as a groundbreaking initiative that will revolutionize the transportation sector nationwide. He urged the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and traffic police officers to embrace the technology to help reduce road fatalities in Kenya. He emphasized the importance of supporting the system to protect lives and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

The implementation of the new system is expected to significantly reduce the number of road fatalities in the country. In the past two months, over 649 people have lost their lives in road accidents, based on NTSA statistics.

The e-sticker will be placed on the left inner side of the windshield, providing the government with vital information about the transportation sector, including the total number of vehicles in the country. The system will also aid in identifying stolen vehicles at various checkpoints nationwide.

Motorists who exceed the speed limit will be flagged by the e-sticker, enabling traffic officers to monitor and enforce traffic laws effectively. Additionally, the system includes features to prevent tampering and destruction of the electronic sticker.

NTSA has yet to confirm whether they will adopt the new system. However, Njoroge expressed optimism that with the cooperation of all road safety stakeholders, including NTSA and traffic police, the number of road fatalities could be significantly reduced within four months.

The e-sticker is a step towards improving road safety and ensuring accountability among motorists. By leveraging technology, the system aims to create a safer and more secure transportation environment in Kenya. It is a proactive measure to address the persistent issue of road fatalities and enhance compliance with traffic regulations.
