The Kenya Tourism Board has reported that the number of Ghanaians and Nigerians traveling to Kenya for tourism purposes has increased by 48% and 6% respectively in 2023. This data has positioned the two West African countries as potential growth markets for Kenya’s tourism industry. In response to this positive trend, Kenya has intensified its efforts to attract more visitors from West Africa, diversify its source markets, and promote intra-Africa tourism.
To achieve these objectives, the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and Kenya Airways are leading a delegation of over 15 travel trade companies to showcase the diverse attractions and offerings of the East African destination. The aim of this initiative, known as the Magical Kenya West Africa Roadshow, is to establish meaningful partnerships with travel industry stakeholders in Ghana and Nigeria, two key markets for Kenya. The roadshow is scheduled to take place in Accra, Lagos, and Abuja from February 5th to 9th, 2024.
During the roadshow, representatives from Kenya and West Africa are expected to engage in networking, share experiences, and explore potential collaborative efforts to promote tourism between the two regions. Eliphas Barine, the Kenyan High Commissioner to Ghana, expressed his satisfaction in seeing the tangible results of ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries. He also emphasized the importance of sustaining the momentum generated by the roadshow beyond the duration of the event.
Fiona Ngesa, the Marketing Manager of KTB, highlighted the strategic significance of Ghana in Kenya’s tourism promotion efforts, emphasizing that Kenya aims to position itself as a sustainable, year-round tourism destination with a diverse range of products and value-added activities. The goal is to increase tourism yield and profits sustainably, leveraging the expertise of the private sector in offering authentic and experiential holidays.
The roadshow in West Africa represents a significant step towards realizing Kenya’s tourism objectives. By fostering strong partnerships with travel trade professionals and engaging in meaningful discussions, the initiative aims to drive sustainable growth in tourist arrivals from Ghana and Nigeria. The positive impact of these endeavors will extend beyond the roadshow, helping to maintain the momentum of collaboration and continued engagement between Kenya and West Africa.
In conclusion, the growth in tourist arrivals from Ghana and Nigeria is a promising development for Kenya’s tourism industry. By emphasizing the potential of West Africa as a key market and forging strategic partnerships with industry stakeholders, Kenya is poised to achieve its objectives of diversifying its source markets, promoting intra-Africa tourism, and attracting more visitors from the region. The Magical Kenya West Africa Roadshow serves as a platform for fostering collaboration, networking, and mutual growth in the tourism sector, ultimately strengthening the ties between Kenya and West Africa.
