Two suspects from Mombasa have been detained for 21 days over allegations of recruiting youths to join terror groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia. The Mombasa Court issued the detention order on Thursday, April 11, allowing detectives to conduct further investigations into the matter. The suspects, both males aged 27 and 21, are believed to be part of a potential terror cell in Likoni, Mombasa County, according to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

The suspects are accused of committing the offence of Recruiting Members of a Terrorist Group, as outlined in Section 13 of the Prevention of Terrorism Act No. 30 of 2012. It is reported that the two individuals were under the influence of a person who had received radicalization training from the Al Shabaab in Somalia. They have also claimed that there are other individuals involved in the group, although they have not been apprehended yet.

Furthermore, the suspects mentioned that the group had been accessing videos of a controversial preacher from a popular social media platform. During the court proceedings, the investigating officer requested 30 days to conclude investigations, including conducting forensic analysis on three phones seized from the first suspect. However, the court granted a 21-day detention period for the suspects.

The decision to detain the suspects comes in the wake of a terrorist attack that occurred on April 9 in Lamu County, resulting in the loss of several Kenyan lives. The attack involved the targeting and torching of a truck and a pickup near the Bagdam Bridge on the far North Coast of the country.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the persistent threat posed by terrorist groups in the region. It highlights the importance of vigilance and proactive measures by law enforcement agencies to counter the spread of radicalization and recruitment activities. The detention of the two suspects signifies a step towards dismantling potential terror cells and preventing future attacks on innocent civilians.

As the investigations continue, authorities are working tirelessly to gather crucial evidence and intelligence to ensure that those involved in terrorist activities are brought to justice. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the public is essential in combating terrorism and maintaining peace and security in the region. The detention of the suspects marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to safeguard the country against the threat of terrorism.
