Super Metro Chief Executive Officer Nelson Nduki has taken a firm stance against indiscipline within his company, confirming that disciplinary action awaits a driver and conductor whose bus was recently nabbed by officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) during a Sunday morning crackdown. The crackdown along Thika Superhighway resulted in the arrest of several individuals, including excess passengers, from various transport companies, with one of the affected Saccos being Super Metro.
Nduki, while acknowledging that he was not aware of the specific Sunday arrest, highlighted the Sacco’s strict no-tolerance policy towards carrying excess passengers. He revealed that Super Metro maintains records of poorly-behaving crew members who are then subjected to disciplinary committee hearings every Friday. Nduki emphasized the presence of inspectors on all roads to ensure compliance with passenger limits, stating that the company does not permit excess passengers in their vehicles under any circumstances.
The CEO explained the disciplinary measures taken against errant crew members, revealing that carrying two excess passengers results in a one-month suspension for the conductor, while carrying more than four excess passengers could lead to expulsion from the company. Nduki emphasized the company’s commitment to upholding safety and adherence to traffic regulations, urging passengers not to board vehicles already at full capacity.
In response to queries about facilitating the release of detained passengers, Nduki reiterated that passengers bear responsibility for boarding full vehicles, which contravenes traffic rules. He emphasized the importance of passengers adhering to guidelines and encouraged them to report any instances of indiscipline through hotline numbers provided by the company.
The NTSA, in a separate statement, clarified that passengers were detained for boarding a full bus, as part of routine safety compliance checks aimed at ensuring road safety for all Kenyans. Additionally, vehicles found to lack proper documentation, including inspection and road service licenses, had their number plates removed as part of the enforcement measures.
The NTSA’s principal communication officer, Anthony Nyongesa, emphasized the agency’s commitment to road safety through stringent enforcement measures, including the apprehension of drunk drivers through alcoblow tests. Recent operations targeting drunk drivers along Thika Road resulted in several motorists being caught unaware and subjected to alcohol testing to maintain road safety standards.
Overall, the joint efforts of regulatory authorities and transport companies like Super Metro underscore the importance of compliance with regulations to uphold safety and order on Kenyan roads. Firm disciplinary actions, combined with proactive monitoring and enforcement measures, are essential in ensuring the well-being of passengers and motorists alike.
