Allan Kipng’eno, a student at the University of Kabianga, is passionately working towards his dream of building a fully functioning helicopter. His dedication and hard work were on display on Sunday, March 10, when he showcased a near-complete helicopter that he built from scratch, impressing residents of Belgut, Kericho County. The handmade aircraft is currently undergoing final touches before Kipng’eno can declare it ready for flight.
The young innovator received praise from both residents and Kenyans who witnessed his work in a viral video. In an interview with Kenyans.co.ke on Monday, March 11, Kipng’eno shared insights into his project and his love for aviation. Despite pursuing a course in Agriculture and Education, his passion for the aviation industry led him to start working on building an aircraft in 2019, right after completing high school. Since then, he has been tirelessly working towards seeing his aircraft soar into the sky.
Having faced financial constraints, Kipng’eno expressed his need for a sponsor to help him realize his dream of building a functioning helicopter. Despite the lack of external funding, he remained committed to making his dream come true. This is his seventh attempt at building a helicopter, using scrap metal and other materials that are easily accessible to him. However, he mentioned that progress has been hindered by the absence of a suitable engine, preventing the helicopter from taking flight at the moment.
Despite the challenges, Kipng’eno has garnered admiration from Kenyans for his determination and resilience in pursuing his passion. Many have called upon the local government and relevant institutions to sponsor him, ensuring that his design is fully functional and to provide mentorship to inspire more Kenyans in the field of aviation.
It is noteworthy that Kipng’eno is not the only Kenyan who has endeavored to build a plane. Geoffrey Otieno from Siaya County also constructed a chopper in 2022 using scrap metal. Similarly, Otieno developed an interest in planes from a young age but faced financial constraints in realizing his dream.
The stories of Kipng’eno and Otieno serve as a testament to the innovative spirit and determination of young Kenyans in pursuing their dreams despite challenges. Their efforts have not only captured the admiration of their fellow citizens but have also sparked a call for support and mentorship to nurture their talents further. By overcoming obstacles and staying committed to their aspirations, these young innovators are inspiring others to dream big and pursue their passions with unwavering dedication.
