On March 12, 2024, Kenya and South Sudan reaffirmed their commitment to mobilize regional support in order to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has been raging for more than 10 months. The two countries emphasized the potential danger of spillover effects from the conflict and the need for a collective effort to resolve the situation.
Kenyan President William Ruto met with Benjamin Bol Mel, South Sudan’s senior presidential advisor, at State House in Nairobi on Monday. During the meeting, Mel conveyed a special message from South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir. President Ruto highlighted the strong relationship between Kenya and South Sudan and expressed his dedication to continuing cooperation on issues of mutual interest, as well as promoting regional peace and stability.
In a statement on March 11, 2024, Mel described the meeting with President Ruto as productive, stating that President Kiir had reiterated his commitment to collaborating closely with Kenya to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Sudan. Mel also expressed President Kiir’s appreciation for the support and dedication of the Kenyan leader in seeking an amicable resolution to the conflict. He underscored the significance of the East African Community, a coalition of eight countries working together towards the common goals of peace, security, and economic prosperity.
Although South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011, it still relies on its neighbour for oil pipelines. President Kiir has been involved in efforts to mediate the conflict since its initial outbreak in April 2023. Despite various attempts to bring the conflicting parties to the negotiating table, including initiatives led by the US-Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and regional leaders, these efforts have thus far proven unsuccessful. Concerns about external involvement and the influence of wealthier Gulf countries have been cited as factors contributing to the protracted conflict.
As Kenya and South Sudan continue to collaborate in seeking an end to the conflict in Sudan, the importance of regional cooperation and support remains paramount. Both countries recognize the potential ramifications of allowing the conflict to persist unchecked, and are committed to working together and engaging with other regional stakeholders to find a sustainable and peaceful resolution to the crisis. The ongoing efforts of Kenya and South Sudan reflect their shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
