Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang did not mince his words as he launched a scathing attack on the county’s governor, George Natembeya, during the burial of the county’s Deputy Governor Philomena Bineah’s father. Chesang expressed his frustration at what he deemed as targeted attacks against him by the governor, hindering his efforts to oversee the county’s affairs.
Specifically, Chesang cited his struggles in ensuring the proper and transparent use of public funds, particularly in his questioning of the appropriation of Ksh800 million meant for development. He adamantly defended his role as a representative of the people, stating, “You voted for me to ensure fair allocation of funds and I have. Should I not ask where the money ends up? When I ask, he (the Governor) accuses me of sabotaging service delivery. Since I am the Senator of this county, all the money I lobby for should be used to serve you, the citizens.”
Furthermore, Chesang highlighted a prior instance where Governor Natembeya was summoned to the Senate for an inquiry into the allocation of Ksh800 million. Despite Chesang’s inquiries, the governor failed to provide evidence of how the funds were utilized, leading to accusations of tribalism against the senator.
The senator also raised concerns about the alleged misappropriation of Ksh25 million meant for development by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs). He revealed that some MCAs had misused the funds, prompting scrutiny from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. Chesang continued to voice his discontent with the evictions conducted under the supervision of the police, which he believed could render over 100,000 people homeless. He faulted both the County and National governments for not providing alternative land for the affected individuals prior to the looming demolitions.
While acknowledging his support for the affordable housing project, Chesang urged the government to avoid displacing Kenyans who had legally acquired land and constructed their residences. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing compensation for the victims before forcefully evicting them.
Chesang’s outspoken criticism of Governor Natembeya and the county’s administration highlights his dedication to ensuring proper governance and advocating for the welfare of the citizens. His unwavering stance against alleged mismanagement of public funds and disregard for the rights of the people reflects a commitment to accountability and transparency in local governance.
As the Senator of Trans Nzoia County, Chesang’s fiery remarks serve as a reminder of the important role elected officials play in upholding the interests of their constituents and holding those in power accountable. His vocal advocacy for prudent use of public funds and protection of the rights of citizens demonstrates a firm commitment to his role as a representative of the people, and underscores the need for transparent and responsible governance at the county level.
