The Senate plenary is set to begin the process of hearing and deciding on the proposed impeachment of Kisii Deputy Governor Robert Monda on Wednesday. This hearing follows the resolution by the House to adjust its meeting schedule for Wednesday and Thursday, which will serve as the final days for the Senate to vote on whether to support or oppose Monda’s impeachment.
The motion to amend the meeting hours was approved by the House Majority Leader, Aaron Cheruiyot. Senators will convene for both morning and afternoon sessions over the two days, with the morning sitting starting at 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and the afternoon session beginning at 2:30 pm until the conclusion of business on the order paper.
Deputy Governor Monda was impeached on February 29, 2024, by members of the Kisii County Assembly over allegations of abuse of office and bribery. During the hearing session on Wednesday, Senators will discuss the accusations against the Deputy Governor before allowing the ward representatives to present their case on the floor of the House. Monda will then have the opportunity to respond and provide a defense before the Senators proceed to vote on whether to uphold the impeachment charges or reject them.
The decision to conduct the impeachment investigation in a plenary session was made after the attempt to establish a special committee for the inquiry on March 7, 2024, failed due to lack of support.
Monda’s hearing is expected to be politically charged, potentially leading to clashes between lawmakers from the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions in the House. Monda is aligned with the Azimio coalition, having been elected on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket alongside Governor Simba Arati.
The outcome of the Senate’s vote on Monda’s impeachment will have significant implications for the political landscape in Kisii County. The hearing process will be closely monitored by stakeholders and the public, as it will determine the fate of the Deputy Governor and potentially impact the governance and leadership in the county.
Overall, the impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Monda highlight the importance of accountability and transparency in governance. The Senate’s decision will be a critical moment in the county’s political history, shaping future dynamics and relationships within the local government. The outcome of the vote will reflect the Senate’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that public officials are held accountable for their actions.
